The Future…

Hi folks,

Hope everyone’s been keeping well.

Time for some straight talk. Before you start worrying – no, I’m not quitting writing for you guys and gals. The Artifice series is far from done.

(Added post-edit: let me preempt this by saying that the following is not intended to guilt anyone into doing anything financially. In fact, please don’t. These are pretty much just the ravings of an idiot.)

The truth of the matter is, as much I love writing, it’s never really made anything in the way of money for me. Honestly, it barely paid for the webhosting for this site. This was a part of the reason that I released all the books for free last year.

I place the blame for that solely on myself. Perhaps I should have found better ways to market my books, or done other things differently. However, dwelling on past regrets just ensures you’ll fail to spot opportunities in the present.

I’ll admit that it would be nice to make enough from the books to be able to quit the day job. But, given the current worldwide situation, I’m glad I still have a job. I’m luckier than a lot of other people right now, and I should thank my lucky stars every night for that.

I’m also eternally grateful for those of you that have read my books, as you folks seem to genuinely enjoy them. Or, who knows, maybe a lot more of you did read them, then immediately died in disgust before being able to leave a bad review. The world will never know.

Now, like I said before, I have no intentions of stopping writing. I actually find it kind of therapeutic in a bizarre way.

However, I don’t think I can compete with other “traditional” ebook authors. There’s just too much competition, in my opinion. Plus, I’ve never been much of a showman, and don’t think I’d be able to market any books based on my personality. I can only go so long before making an inappropriate joke, and then I’ll have to roommate with Salman Rushdie.

So, I’ve been toying around with a few ideas, and I think I’ve settled on a tentative plan of action.

As you may know, I’ve put up a Patreon page. I’m thinking of releasing any new Artifice books piecemeal, on a monthly (maybe bi-weekly?) basis to Patreons. Of course, once a full Episode is complete, I’ll compile it and put it out “properly” as well. And, because I’m dumb and really hate gating off stuff behind paywalls, I’ll release said piecemeal components for free after a set number of weeks.

But, like I said, this is tentative and I’m open to any criticism/suggestions from you folks. Feel free to just outright tell me that this is a dumb idea. I won’t take offense.

Also, as stupid as this sounds, I’ve also been pondering my Facebook page. I honestly don’t know what to put there. I’m the equivalent of an Amish person when it comes to social media. I don’t want it to be filled with “Buy my books!!!” type posts, or pictures of my current meal. I also don’t want it to just be duplicates of what’s posted here, or maybe that’s a good thing? I honestly don’t know.

Perhaps I’m just overthinking it. We’ll see.

Anyways, this post went on for quite a while longer than I thought it would. If you read it, thanks. If you didn’t, I don’t blame you.

I’m off to finish some more writing before bedtime.

Take care and stay safe, folks!
